Living on Rainbows ~ SOLD

“Lots of people like rainbows.
Children make wishes on them,
artists paint them and dreamers chase them,
but the Aquarian lives on one."
~ Linda Goodman
Linda Goodman's Sun Signs

The Age of Aquarius an age that the world has just entered,
believed by some to signal a period of peace and harmony.

Guess what my sign is!
No wonder I've lived my life dreaming and painting rainbows.

I've been lying awake nights trying to decide what to paint at my demo in NYC in a couple of weeks. (500 people are expected in the store on the first day - when I'll be there.) I keep hearing reassuring advice in my head from my various painting mentors; "Paint what you know, keep it simple, practice painting what you plan to paint, have a plan. Don't worry, even if you don't think it turned out, they will think it did."

So far, my plan is to do 2 or 3 paintings (or parts of paintings) during my two hour slot demonstrating a few different techniques.  I painted this "Rainbow Feather on Yupo Paper" as a demo possibility, showing a fun and forgiving, direct approach. It was done with no preliminary pencil lines. My reference was an ink jet print out of one I did a couple of years ago on 140 lb cold-press rag paper. It took me less than an hour to paint. Do you think it would be a suitable subject to use?

I'd appreciate any feedback, advice or opinions on my upcoming demo
from fellow artists or anyone who'd be generous enough to offer some.

*Special End of Summer Sale
for the month of August only
I'm offering any of my original paintings framed for the matted price!
Upon receiving your order,
I will email you to find out which color frame you prefer.

  1. Sandy - you are going to knock their socks off. There's no way you can flub this. The feather is lovely, lively and I think a very interesting subject. Your florals and trees are outstanding too....just paint what you love.(hummingbirds pop into my mind) That's the best advice I've always been given.

  2. I think this would be a great demo to do! Love the painting & the colors. I have heard that NYC art world leans more towards contemporary art style than in the rest of the country, but to be honest, I have seen a full spectrum of art styles in the city. "Paint what you know, paint what you like" and it will all work out!

  3. yes I like this as a demo piece. Keep it simple, something your audience can imagine trying themselves. The more advanced viewer can take whatever you show and run with it. Will you have smaller papers out to let viewers try on the spot? Also I'm sure you will have some of your work on display around your work area! Some of your beautiful horses. And birds?

    1. So far, it's unanimous... Rainbow Feather = demo #1! ... Now I need to figure out what else to do. That is a GREAT idea to have some Yupo paper to give out ... If not to try on the spot, so people can take home a small sample to try. I will talk to Marc at Legion Papers about that. As far as taking some work to display ... That is an excellent idea also ... Since I'll be commuting, and lugging art supplies ... I'll just take a few matted pieces in acetate sleeves to lighten my load. THANKS so much for your suggestions and thoughtful additions here Carmella!

  6. Just read on your blog that you are nervous and having sleepless nights over your impending visit to the big apple. Being nervous about something like this is very natural, I know that before a big talk I got nervous but was always calm once I got into it. Once you get into your demo you will forget that there are even people there. I think your florals are always good and I liked the color in the feather. I have every confidence that everything will be fine. Love Dad
